Skill, timing and reflexes are required in most online games. But most of the time they are needed for quite complex games that involve many different types of characters, levels and opponents. When you need a break from such games you probably are looking for something simple and fun.
Slither fills that need perfectly with a simple yet addictive game set up. You will be controlling a small worm who becomes increasingly larger as he gobbles up small crystal like objects. It is a multi-player game environment where you never know who you are up against. But you will quickly encounter some very skilled players.
On this page, you will learn what the game is all about and how you can advance and outsmart others. It’s quick to learn, but will require skill and practice to master. When you first start, you see some huge worms and in quite a short time that could be you.
What is Slither About?
In Slither, you are essentially in control of a small worm. This worm lives in a two-dimensional world with worms of all different sizes. The aim is to feed on as many of the crystal-like objects in different colors as you can. For each one you eat your worm grows a little ain length and width. The more you feed the bigger you get.
What you will quickly try and do is to set new personal records to see how much you can grow. Sometimes you will only last a few seconds before it’s game over, other times it will go on for 10 or 20 minutes. The challenge is to keep beating your records.
Speaking of game over. The game ends when you bump into another worm. It doesn’t matter whether that worm is bigger or smaller than you. You simply have to avoid it. But this makes the game really interesting. It means that even the largest worms can be brought down, by cutting them off strategically.
What’s great about this game is that it is a multi-player game where you are up against loads of other gamers around the world. Every single worm you see while playing is someone somewhere sitting on a computer or tablet or phone.
How Do The Controls Work?
The controls are really simple to learn. On a computer, you use your mouse to change direction and essentially guide your worm through the game scene. You have to have quick reactions and opponents of all sizes will be fighting for the same food and will try and cut you off so that you lose.
When you hit the mouse button you will get a short speed boost that is very useful in a couple of ways. In the tips and tricks section you will learn more about when to best use your speed boost. But one reason is to just speed up the process of gathering all the food you can.
If you are playing on a mobile device with touch screen, then the controls are a little different. Essentially you move you finger around and in the direction, you want your worm to move. And to get the same speed boost you will simply double tap the screen.
This is all very simple, but you need to really get some good reaction times to boost your skills and high scores.
Special Game Features
Slither is a very simple game overall and there isn’t much to it. But a few features are available that you will want to be aware of before you get going.
Dependent on the device you are playing on, you might need to change the quality settings. Two options are available and those are high and low quality. To be honest, there isn’t much of a difference between the two. At least not visually. But if you are seeing some sluggish grapics or stuttering while you are moving around then you might need to reduce the quality a bit.
You will find this setting on the main home menu in the top right corner. Simply click on it and the quality will switch between low and high.
When you start the game you immediately enter the game arena. There will be many other players there with you, and they will have all different sizes. There is a leaderboard for all Slither players constantly shown at the top right. This includes the top ten longest worms currently in the game and the length of the worm as well. This is a great target to have, but it could take you quite a while to reach those extremely long numbers.
Usually these range from 10,000 and upwards where some players even manage to get close to 20,000. You can figure out yourself how long that might take. But once you get into the swing of the game you’ll likely try to get on that leaderboard.
You’ll probably notice that some of the worms have different colors and patterns, as well as weird eyes. These can all be unlocked by using the social sharing button on the main menu screen. If you share the game on Twitter or Facebook you will have new skins available that can be used to customize your worm.
Some of these are really cool and include the ability to choose flags or just rainbow colors. Try out the social sharing and see how weird you can make your worm look.
Tips And Tricks
The best tip we can give you is to try out the game and just dive in. It will take a little while to get used to all the different worms and especially the big ones that appear. The more game time you have the better you will become. And then you can quickly make it onto that leaderboard. But there are also a few tricks that you can employ to get there faster.
Cut Other Players Off
When you see other worms moving around then try and boost your speed and then cut them off by moving just in front of them. Even when a large worm bumps into you while are still very small, then they will evaporate. This takes quite a bit of skill but it is a way to advance even faster. At the beginning, you should probably try and stay out of trouble and just eat as much as you can.
Once you are about 500 to 1,000 long this trick will become easier and a lot more effective as well.
Swallow Up Opponents
When you cut off another player, or when you see another worm disintegrate, you should immediately try and eat all of the crystals that are released. This is a very effective way to swallow up a load of them and gain a lot of length in very short space of time.
But you have to look out for other larger players around these situations. Everyone tries to get the advantage from a worm that has bumped into an opponent. So, there will be a lot of them together in a tight space and that can end up with you being trapped.
These are critical to learn to use, but you also have to be careful. They are triggered by pressing the mouse button and for short bursts you will see your worm moving a lot faster. This has two specific advantages that can help you advance a lot quicker.
Firstly, when you start the game you will be moving around looking for food. You are at a constant speed and this can take a lot of time. By using the speed boosts, you will be able to move a lot quicker. And the faster you move the more food you’ll get to.
The second advantage is as an offensive or defensive move. Sometimes you will be right up against other worms around you. And by using the speed boost you can try and get ahead of them and essentially cut them off or run a circle around them. This can cause even larger worms to have nowhere to go and bump into you or someone else.
As a defensive move, you will need to figure out what the other players are doing that might cause you to get trapped. If you are close to being in a tricky situation then it might be a good time to hit the boost button and get out of there to a safer place. Both these moves take a bit of skill and practice. So, make sure you start using them from the very start.
The great thing is that this game uses web browser technology based on Java and WebGL. Most browsers have this technology built in and you will immediately be able to load and play the game. This is even the case on mobile platforms like Android, iOS and Windows mobile. Simply open your favorite browser on your phone or tablet and you should be ready to go.
Alternatively, you can install the app. The game developers have brought out a standalone designated app. The advantage is that it performs a bit better than the mobile browser and it loads a lot quicker as well.
